 | | The club | What is it these days with GAScc? Along with the club going from strength to strength we also seem to be blessed with the weather?
This was the case yet again this month as we attended the Youghal classic car show on the 24th May. Youghal, an East Cork sea side town plays host to one of the best cars shows in the Munster region. This mainly is due to the fact that the show is run as a strict classic car show, no steam engines or tractors in sight which usually is the norm on these events.
We met at KFC in Little Island at around 9.00am, in total we had 18 cars and 25 members gathered. Loaded with breakfast rolls and coffee, we headed for Youghal at approx 9.45, the warm sunny conditions made the spin down to the show all the more enjoyable and we arrived at the grounds good and early which allowed us to keep all the club cars together. The good weather brought the car enthusiasts out in numbers and in no time the ground began to fill with a fine selection of classic cars both European and American.
There were even some overseas clubs there from Wales. The quality and selection of cars was of very high standard from classic Mercedes , Austins, Fords, MGs, Rolls Royce, and Jaguars. There was something there for everyone and of course from our end there was a good few American classics there as well. It was great to see Teddy Dyer out in what I think is one of the nicest examples of a Mustang in the country: his 1966 Fastback. Mick o’Shea arrived in his El Camino loaded with a mini motor bike in the back. Dave Jackson was also there with a fabulous 1969 Camaro and there was even an Eleanor replica present.
On walking the ground there was American stuff planted in and around the whole show; as mentioned we had some good examples of American Classics on display. Tom Leahy got a lot of attention with his 72 Mach 1 every time it was started. Tony Mac had his Dodge ex-army truck on display, and of course Hugh McAvoy had his freshly painted Chevy Truck with him. Declan Dwyer made the trip down from Tipperary in his 1968 Mustang Fastback.
Burgers and chips was the order of the day from the local chip van and cups of coffee from the pub.
At about 4.30 the prizes were called out. This show must have the largest selection of trophies available. I think in total there were 18 categories. And this year GAScc managed to win yet another prize with my own 1968 Mustang Fastback as “Nicest American Car”. This completed a hat trick of wins by the club for this trophy, as John Foley won it the year before with his 1969 Cadillac, and the year before that Kalli with his 1964½ Mustang coupe. So fingers crossed for next year.
Soon after the prizes were given out we made tracks for home stopping for a bit of grub in the Elm Tree.
So all in all it was a great show, great cars, good people and craic turned up to full. Hopefully we will see a few well run and well organised events like the Youghal Classic Car Show in our area in the near future, and hopefully our luck will remain with us with regards to the weather.
Well done to John Green and everyone else involved in the running of the show
